Synopsis
Kippei Katakura is a 17-year-old playboy who spends his time chasing girls, careless of their feelings. But when his 5-year-old cousin yuzuyu comes to live with his family after her mother’s sudden disappearance. Kippei is put in charge of taking care of her. As Kippei gets to know Yuzuyu and starts to understand how she feels, he also begins to realize that all girls were like Yuzuyu once…

Kippei has a lot to figure out, like what to make for Yuzuyu’s lunch and how to drop her off at kindergarten while still getting to high school on time. Kippei is enjoying his time with Yuzuyu, but not everyone is happy about it. The girls at school miss their quality time with kippei, and one decides to play dirty to get him back.

First impression (why we brought it)

Back in the days of university (the 3rd year) Alex got addicted to an anime forum which opened himself to other forms of geekdom. One of those would come with the label ‘Cute’. One day Tim caught Alex out watching the series (episode 16).

This didn’t help Alex as he couldn’t just say he picked this up and was clearly halfway through the story. Embarrassed and cliché Alex admitted he liked it and finally gave in to liking cute things, Tim however was already consumed. 1 year later (and having money) Tim brought the entire manga series in one shot online
(due to the overly embarrassing cover).

Side note: This is the first real ‘Cute’ manga we here at Obscure Road admitted and acquired. As such this is a corner stone for all that would be to follow.
We are very biased towards this piece as the breakthrough of cute so please understand. Maybe there is a better one or this is a rip off of another series but we don’t know or care for that matter. Aishiteruze Baby was first on the scene.

So what did we think?

For Alex... It was cute... he doesn’t want to admit anything else.
For Tim you can pretty much copy and paste the above.

However I think for both of us we did recently become uncles (Tim has a niece and Alex has a nephew) So we were able to reflect on personal experience.
This does make books more enticing and also some of the jokes are more obvious for the same reason.

Awesomeness

Tim: Maki has got girls emotions down to a tee, perfectly emphasising it with lovely cute art style. But more importantly it doesn’t have girls shouting pervert in every interval with the main character like some emotional mangas do.
(This seriously gets on Tim’s nerves).
Since reading Aishiteruze Baby I have got involved with other Shojo to compare them and have yet to find the same kind of depth in the emotions that I got with this manga.

Alex: Being new to the world of Shojo the drawing style was completely new to me. Saying that it did spark my curiosity and indeed was what made me start watching it in the first place. When reading the manga it was a new experience that helped improve my own understanding of the genre. In addition the story was a much needed positivity and niceness that I really could do with more in my life as well as my imagination.

Tim: *cough* Secret Emo *cough*

Alex: Shush you!

Tim: Hey I got a bad cough leave me alone, *cough* Issues Boy *cough*

Drop Ball

Alex: The book gets a little problematic when emotional gun shots start to riddle the pages in somewhat uncharacteristic ways. Once reading it I guess I didn’t notice as I was sucked into this world but looking back I believe this is a serious flaw. One I will happily overlook as overall it was enjoyable and I didn’t once feel forced into the emotion.

Tim: Yeah the general outrageous emotional turmoil in some parts wasn't explained from the other side well enough. There is seriously a little too much emphasis on the real world being a horrible and scary place if it isn’t for the love of a small child.

Alex: Hey that’s my line!

Tim: I said it, you elaborated it. Its my line.

Alex: =_=!

The verdict

Tim: This book kept making me want to read on. Not to mention its one of those few manga you read over again and again and it will still move you. It’s weird but it kind of makes you want to have a family...

Alex: Dude!

Tim: Whatever!

Alex: Yeah I love the art style. But I think overall it is a nice, positive and cute manga which as stated before is a much needed in my collection of otherwise miserable, zombie infected paranoid manga.

Tim: So why haven't you brought it yet?

Alex: It's on my to do list.

Tim: Your just scared of taking your first step toward Shojo.

Alex: I will when i'm ready!

In the end Tim decided to give this an 8
Alex on the other hand gave this a 7.6
So the overall ORR (Obscure Road Review) is 7.8

Take Heed!
If you just like action and hate emotional cute things this clearly isn’t for you. However if you want to approach manga from a different angle this is good stuff and definatly advisable as a first dip into the world of Shojo. Of course if you are used to this sort of book it may well be in its own right a worthy addition.

Below are a few captions just to give you a sample of the cuteness within.
